Sustainable and Eco-Tourism: The Idea of the Future.

Sustainable tourism and ecotourism are terms that have been gaining increasing prominence in the vocabulary of travelers and tourism entrepreneurs. In today’s world, where environmental protection is becoming increasingly important, this concept appears as an optimal way forward. But what does it actually mean, and how can it be achieved?
What Is Sustainable or Eco-Tourism?
Sustainable tourism is a concept that focuses on the development of tourism that respects and protects the natural, cultural, and social environment while also contributing to the economic prosperity of the local community.
Ecotourism is a specific branch of sustainable tourism. Its goal is to ensure that travel minimizes its impact on nature and fully respects it. Ecotourism places more emphasis on educating tourists and travelers who participate in protective and cultural activities. While ecotourism should always be sustainable, not all examples of sustainable tourism are considered ecotourism.
Why is Sustainable Tourism Important?
The first and most important reason is that it helps to protect our planet. Tourism is a significant part of our global culture, that allows us to explore different parts of the world, meet people from various areas of the world, and experience new traditions and activities. However, it also accounts for a significant percentage of global greenhouse gas emissions. Furthermore, sustainable tourism helps strengthen the economy of local communities, because it focuses on long-term development rather than on short-term profit.
Sustainable Tourism in Slovakia
Examples of sustainable tourism are starting to emerge in Slovakia as well. Several accommodation facilities are trying to minimize their carbon footprint, recycle, and use renewable energy sources.
An important project is the Eco Center ArTUR in Hrubý Šúr, which aims to promote ecological and sustainable living, education, and learning. It focuses on traditional techniques and materials, permaculture, and ecological construction.
Slovakia is home to many national parks and protected landscape areas, which are the main destinations for ecotourism. These areas offer visitors the opportunity to learn about the local flora and fauna while also promoting the protection of these territories. This type of tourism can be seen in regions such as Slovak Paradise, Tatra National Park, or Poloniny.
These and many other initiatives demonstrate that sustainable tourism in Slovakia is not just a utopian vision but a real possibility that can contribute to a better future for all of us.
How to Achieve Sustainable Tourism?
The key to achieving sustainable tourism is collaboration among various stakeholders: governments, businesses, local communities, and tourists themselves. We all must play our part.
Entrepreneurs should implement sustainable practices into their operations, whether it’s recycling, using renewable energy sources, or providing authentic local experiences. Tourists prefer businesses that prioritize sustainable tourism and they want to be more informed and conscientious in their decisions. Therefore, don’t hesitate and mention every activity that is aimed at improving and protecting the environment. Energy-efficient lighting, recycling systems, waste composting, local products, regional cuisine, community gardens, and beekeeping—all of these can be appealing for many tourists.
In Slovakia, you can get inspired by the certified “eco-friendly hotel” Dália. This hotel, with the prestigious EU Ecolabel certification from the European Union, offers eco-friendly, pet-friendly, and cyclist-friendly accommodation. They also have a GREEN MEETINGS program that is aimed at organizing green conferences and seminars, as well as their own charging station for electric vehicles. Moreover, eco-travelers who arrive at Košice by train, bicycle, or electric car can enjoy special benefits, discounts, and complimentary services.
Sustainable and ecotourism are not just trendy phrases. They are specific steps you can take to protect our planet while simultaneously developing tourism and the economy of our regions. The challenge for Slovak entrepreneurs and travelers is to join this global trend and actively work towards achieving sustainable tourism, (not only) in our country.
